#ZolaCouple: Meet Cortney + Maurice

Meet our latest #ZolaCouple, Cortney and Maurice. These two gorgeous people met in college, and literally jumped over hurdles to get together. They fell in love, and the rest is history. Read for yourselves!

How did you meet?
We ran on the same track team in college and had the same circle of friends. Both being hurdlers, we spent lots of time training together day in and day out – where we got to know one another first as friends and eventually began to develop a relationship.

How did he propose?
He didn’t. I didn’t. Marriage was something that neither of us had ever dreamt about, but we knew we wanted to spend our lives together. We discussed the idea of eloping and realized it was an option that excited us the most!

What was the first thing you did after you got engaged?
Had an IPA at our favorite neighborhood brewery.

Tell us about your wedding & the theme!
We decided to have a handful of our family come along with us to Washington’s beautiful San Juan Islands. Being from San Diego, we were enthralled by the change of scenery.

I loosely maintained a gem-toned theme throughout. It appeared in everyone’s attire and my bouquet. All the girls chose their own dresses + ended up being the perfect combination of colors and styles!!! I couldn’t believe it!!!

What is a fun fact about you as a couple?
Neither of us favored beer until two summers ago we made it to over 60 San Diego craft breweries + now continue to discover new ones in our free time!

What something you and your spouse love to do together?
We love going to open houses on weekends! Beyond dreaming up the possibilities for a life at each of the houses, we love seeing the different ways people utilize their space and make little mental notes for our first house (whenever that time comes).

What is your favorite gift from your registry?
I think the first gift we received was our favorite. Even though we created the registry as an option for family and friends, it’s like we didn’t actually expect people to buy things for us! We both got that first email + texted each other in excitement almost simultaneously!!! And truthfully, every gift after proved to be just as surprising and exciting as the first!

Any tips for balancing wedding planning with your everyday busy life?
Cortney: I wish I had some kind of life changing advice for the newly engaged…I was a horrible example of balance. Even though I had 10 guests, I spent hours on Pinterest, corresponding with my photographer, videographer, florist, designing our announcements, etc. I have always had a hard time asking for help from others, but also enjoy knowing that things were in my hands and that I was the one responsible if something didn’t go as expected. I always say I couldn’t imagine surviving planning for 100+ people!!

But, to be honest, I think that’s all part of it. The excitement, enthusiasm, and chaos that we as brides juggle in order to pull everything together just the way we want it! It’s the powerful female force that I believe we all have!

I also found it helpful that I followed my intuition for every decision. If something didn’t feel right or like “us”, I ditched it.

Favorite meal to cook for two?
Something in the slow cooker!

Go-to dinner on a week night?
Rice, chicken + a veggie!

What do you both do for a living?

Tips on decorating when you have people over?
Access to a nice chunky throw blanket, floor pillows for additional guest seating, pretty glassware + an aerating decanter for the wine!

Would you rather be the host or the guest?
Cortney: The host / there’s something about being in my own home that can’t be beat. Plus, dishes are my favorite chore. ☺
Maurice: The guest / no need for cleanup!

Cortney: Dark & Stormy
Maurice: Whiskey Ginger

What do you love most about being a newlywed?
Cortney: Establishing traditions together that we can carry on through the rest of our years!
