Meet the lovely Heidi & Frank. This #ZolaCouple had a wedding that was fit for the big screen! In fact, their wedding theme was inspired by the Wes Anderson film Grand Budapest Hotel. We think they nailed it. What do you think? When they aren’t busy being a power couple, Heidi is a wedding & lifestyle photographer, and together they own a wedding venue in New York called Takk House. Read on to hear their love story – it’s one for the books!
How did you meet?
We had a few friends in common that Frank went to college with. The rest is history.
How did he propose?
On New Years Eve, Frank proposed to me! It was the first year we bought our venue space. We had all our friends and family over that year because we could throw a serious party! As the ball was dropping on a giant projection on the wall he asked me to marry him! It was really special, because even though we were in a room with a hundred people it was our moment. No one else knew what was happening.
What was the first thing you did after you got engaged?
We actually went to Mexico! We already had the vacation planned, but everyone thought it was our engagement vacation. Haha. It was a really nice way to soak it all in.
Tell us about your wedding & the theme!
Our ceremony was actually in Iceland. Frank has a ton of family in Iceland, because his mom was born there! She is one of the only members of the family that came over to the US. It was a really small private elopement with our immediate family and friends. We had a beautiful intimate reception afterward with all the “icelanders”. Our US reception was a month later. We wanted to make it fun and really special for our guests. We put them first with everything we planned. Being in the wedding industry, I felt a lot of pressure to make everything extra thoughtful and different. We decided to go with a “vintage hotel” theme and with that came a lot of inspiration from The Grand Budapest Hotel and Wes Anderson. It was so much fun to plan and collect, create and build so many cool pieces for the wedding.
Any tips for balancing wedding planning with your everyday busy life?
Get all the big stuff done early on. That way you can focus more on the excitement and crafting/collecting of decorations and things (if you are into that). It gives you more time to curate the look/feel of everything and feel less stressed out.
Favorite meal to cook for two?
We are suckers for pretty much anything Mexican!
Go-to dinner on a week night?
Some type of rice bowl. Quick, easy, healthy and delicious!
Cooking or baking?
Ah, both are so different. I really love baking, but it takes some serious time and patience. I am usually pretty busy, so cooking wins that battle.
Tips on decorating when you have people over?
When creating our registry, I 100% envisioned half of it being used to host guests. Haha. I love decorating for parties! I LOVE platters and fun pieces designed for sharing goodies. The only tips I have are to try and stick with a general theme or color scheme. It helps keep you focused on fun items that work well together instead of going too overboard.
Would you rather be the host or the guest?
Whiskey Ginger with a cherry 🙂
Best party you’ve hosted or attended together?
Oh my gosh, we own a venue, so this is pretty impossible to answer! I think our favorite party of the year is our New Years Eve celebration. We only invite friends and family. We ask everyone to bring a little something, and we share it as a group. We project the NYC celebration on a big wall. It is just a ton of fun!
What do you love most about being a newlywed?
I love being part of a unit. It feels more like a family now. Just saying “Husband” and “Wife” is fun! I feel like we are starting a new chapter of our relationship, and it is really exciting.
