DIT: Grow Your Own Herbs

Love cooking with fresh herbs? This summer, grow your own fresh sage and basil in your backyard or windowsill by following these easy DIY tips. Not only is this a great way to spend the afternoon together, but these plants are something you will use all year long.

1| Pick Your Herbs

Grow as many plants as you think you’ll use and have room for or love to cook with. Pick from basil, thyme, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage, or dill. These all are regularly used in the kitchen, easy to grow, and need little tending to.

2| Pick Your Pots

Don’t settle for boring pots. Get creative and make your small herb garden a thing of beauty. You can use mason jars, tin cans, or decorate ceramic pots with paint and string.

3| Plant Your Herbs

You can either buy seeds or young plants. We suggest the latter – save yourself time, let the professionals do the seeding, and buy your herbs after they’ve already sprouted. Make sure to repot soon after purchasing them using organic potting soil and a small shovel.

4| Let Them Grow With Sunshine

Don’t let the limitations of your home prevent you from growing your own herbs. All they need is some suns and they’re good to go. Together, pick a place where you have some room and lots of sunlight to hang or arrange the pots.

5| Watch Them Grow

Water (but don’t drown!) these plants and watch them grow. It might take a few weeks until they’re ready to harvest so be patient. It’s well worth the wait!

6| Harvest the Herbs

For most herbs you can just cut off sprigs as you need them. For basil, harvest the upper leaves first and only take a few at a time. Make sure to use scissors and only take as much as you need.
